Rescue 8

Station 8 has been through five Class 2 and two Class 1 boats in its 27 years of operation. We started out in Jan 1979 with an early 6m ski boat named "Kowie" which was an early Sailfish which was converted in Okko De Jamaer's backyard. In March 1980 we then moved onto an 8m Renata Levi 21" known as the "Sprit of Mobil", During July 1988 to March 1989 We had a temporary 6m ski boat named "Florence Carter". We returned to the "Spirit of Mobil" 8m in April 1989 and continued with her until she was tragically destroyed in the 1995 fire which destroyed the base. Spirit of Rotary was brought down from Walvis bay and after much love and a few refits, she was the sterling workhorse of the fleet after she was commissioned soon after the fire. Spirit of Rotary was retired in October 2006 and replaced with the newly refitted Brede class.

The Brede - Spirit of MTU - Nadine Gordimer (October 2006 - present)

The call sign "Rescue 8" now belongs to a Brede which was taken onto station during October 2006. Station 8 received the RNLI Brede Class vessel from the RNLI Base in Poole, UK. The Brede was names "Inner Wheel" and carried the RNLI number 33-07.

Several other original Breede's are operational at the following stations:

Station 3 - Cape Town (formally 33-08 from RNLI base Alderney)
Station 5 - Durban
Station 9 - Gordon's Bay
Station 6 - Port Elizabeth

The Brede's that are in service at Hout Bay and Cape Town (as well as several other NSRI bases) have been modified from the original RNLI hull designs to meet the specifications laid down by the two bases.

Spirit of Rotary (1995 - 2006)

The Sprit of Rotary was a 12m wooden hulled vessel originally from Walvis Bay and was refitted in Hout Bay to replace "Spirit of Mobile" which was destroyed in the base fire of 1995. "Spirit of Rotary" was built in 1975 and celebrated her 30 birthday last year.  

Spirit of Rotary was one of the large deep sea rescue vessels the NSRI operates in South Africa. Her specs are listed below.
